Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily caused by the degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra, a region of the brain involved in movement control. The reduction in dopamine disrupts communication within the basal ganglia, leading to impaired motor control and the characteristic symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease, including tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and postural instability. The condition is also associated with the accumulation of abnormal protein deposits called Lewy bodies, which contain alpha-synuclein and contribute to neuronal dysfunction and cell death. As the disease progresses, both motor and non-motor symptoms may develop, including cognitive changes, mood disorders, sleep disturbances, and autonomic dysfunction.

PD warrior is an exercise and education program people with Parkinson’s Disease, especially those newly diagnosed or in the early stages of the condition. The program uses neuroactive exercise principles to promote neuroplasticity, neuroprotection, and neurorestoration. The movements are high-effort, task-specific, and cognitively challenging. The course also gives education and behavioural strategies to promote self-management and lifestyle changes for participants to have their own health autonomy. Additionally it also provides a sense of community amongst other participants with Parkinson’s.
