Initial Assessment

There are a couple of key things to remember when doing your initial assessment and setting the patient up for their program.

The assessment is crucial in establishing your client’s expectations of therapy, main presenting problems and getting them invested in the program. Every new client should receive a hardcopy of the workbook, even if they do not purchase the home starter kit. You can download this for printing from the attachments below.

In your first session, you should aim to achieve the following:

  • Identify which Type of Parkinson’s they have: Bradykinesia, Tremor dominance or agility impaired
  • Identify their main functional complaint, eg: dual tasking, balance, lack of arm swing, shuffling gait, fine motor control and then more specifically the daily tasks or actions that bother them and can be used for self-evaluation during the program
  • Collect outcome measures to validate their complaints and history
  • Provide them with a ‘quick win’ within the session to assist with motivation and ‘buy-in’
  • Aim to book your follow up review sessions at 3, 6 and 12 months before your client starts the 10 week challenge circuit.
